Proper cuff placement is important to ensure accurate blood pressure readings. Follow the steps below when using your iHealth blood pressure monitor.
Position the cuff correctly
Wrap the cuff around your bare upper arm, not over clothing. The cuff should be placed about 1 inch (2–3 cm) above your elbow.
Make sure the air tube is positioned along the inside of your arm, aligned with your artery (center of your arm).
Ensure a snug fit
The cuff should be snug but not too tight. You should be able to fit one to two fingers between the cuff and your arm. A cuff that is too loose or too tight can affect accuracy.
Sit in the correct position
Before taking a measurement:
- Sit in a chair with your back supported
- Keep your feet flat on the floor (do not cross your legs)
- Rest your arm on a flat surface, such as a table
Your arm should be at heart level during the reading.
Stay still and relaxed
Remain still and do not talk during the measurement. Movement or talking can cause inaccurate results.
Take multiple readings if needed
For best results, take up to 3 readings, about 1 minute apart, and compare or average the results.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Placing the cuff over clothing
- Positioning the cuff too low or too high on the arm
- Letting the arm hang down or not keeping it at heart level
