General Q&A
Q: Why do I need to remove the cap before measuring?
A: The protective cap covers the infrared probe. Leaving it on blocks the sensor and causes failed or inaccurate readings (a common cause of “dynamic measurement failed”). Always remove the cap first.
Q: How far should the thermometer be from the forehead?
A: No more than 1.18 in (3 cm) from the centre of the forehead — about one to two finger-widths. Keep the probe perpendicular to the forehead and hold the subject steady.
Q: How do I select a temperature mode?
A: The default mode is Infant. In the measurement state, press the Settings button briefly to enter mode-switching, then press it again to cycle Infant → Child → Adult → Object. Press the Measurement button to save the selected mode and start a measurement. The thermometer turns off automatically after 15 seconds of inactivity.
Q: How do I switch between °F and °C?
A: Press and hold the Measurement button for 8 seconds to enter unit-switching; the current unit flashes. Press the Measurement button to toggle °C / °F (a short beep confirms each press), then press and hold the Measurement button for ~2 seconds to confirm. The selected unit lights up for 3 seconds and the thermometer turns off. (The unit is also saved automatically after 15 seconds of inactivity.)
Q: What do the on-screen colors and beeps mean? (Fever Alert Chart)
A: In the body modes, the screen color and confirmation beeps change with the result. Temperature status is for reference only — advise customers to consult a doctor if concerned. Object mode gives one long beep (success) or four short beeps (failure) and has no color alert.
Infant Mode (0–3 Months)
| 89.6°F – 99.4°F (32.0–37.4°C) | 99.5°F – 109.2°F (37.5–42.9°C) | |
| Color | Green | Red |
| Beep | 1 long beep | 4 short beeps |
Child Mode (3–36 Months)
| 89.6–99.4°F (32.0–37.4°C) | 99.5–100.3°F (37.5–37.9°C) | 100.4–109.2°F (38.0–42.9°C) | |
| Color | Green | Orange | Red |
| Beep | 1 long beep | 4 short beeps | 4 short beeps |
Adult Mode (≥ 3 Years)
| 89.6–99.4°F (32.0–37.4°C) | 99.5–101.2°F (37.5–38.4°C) | 101.3–109.2°F (38.5–42.9°C) | |
| Color | Green | Orange | Red |
| Beep | 1 long beep | 4 short beeps | 4 short beeps |
Green = Normal | Orange = Moderate fever | Red = High fever
Q: What is the difference between the body modes and Object mode?
A: Infant, Child, and Adult modes measure body temperature and give a color-coded fever alert and beeps. Object mode measures the surface temperature of objects (e.g., milk, bath water) and has no color fever alert. Make sure the correct mode is selected — aim at the object without touching it with the probe.
Object mode: aim the probe at the object — do not touch it with the probe.
Q: Why are two back-to-back readings slightly different?
A: Skin-surface temperature naturally fluctuates and is affected by skin tone, measurement distance, sweat, hair, cosmetics, drafts, and recent temperature changes. Take readings on a clean, dry, uncovered forehead in a stable environment.
Q: The customer just came inside from a very hot or cold environment — can they measure right away?
A: No. Let the subject sit at a stable room temperature for a while first, otherwise the forehead skin temperature will not reflect true body temperature. The device must also be within its operating range of 50°F – 104°F (10°C – 40°C); outside that it shows “Err”.
Q: What batteries does the PT9S use, and can I use rechargeables?
A: It uses 2 × AAA (1.5V) batteries. Replace both with new batteries at the same time and observe the polarity. When the battery symbol appears, replace them promptly. Do not short-circuit batteries or dispose of them in fire, and remove the batteries if the device will not be used for a long time.
Q: How do I review previous readings?
A: Press and hold the Settings button for 3 seconds to enter memory mode — the memory icon “M” is displayed. Press the Settings button to toggle between stored readings; the latest reading is shown first.
Q: How do I delete the stored readings?
A: In the power-off state, press and hold the Measurement and Settings buttons together for 8 seconds until the “dEL” icon appears. After about 2 seconds all memories are deleted and the thermometer turns off.
Q: How do I turn the sound on or off?
A: Press the Mute button on the top right corner of the device. The Mute symbol shows on the screen when the sound is off.
Q: The screen shows “Err” — what does it mean?
A: The ambient temperature is outside the operating range (50°F – 104°F / 10°C – 40°C) or is unstable. Move to a room within the designed range, let the device acclimate, and measure again.
Q: When does the thermometer power off, and what does the low-battery alert do?
A: The thermometer turns off automatically after 15 seconds of inactivity. When the battery is low but still usable, the battery icon appears with the reading; if the battery is too low to measure, the screen shows the alert and the device switches off after 15 seconds — replace the batteries to continue.
Q: Is the temperature status (Green/Orange/Red) a diagnosis?
A: No. The color status is for reference only. Advise customers to consult a doctor or healthcare professional if they are concerned about a reading.
